Rickie Fowler hits hole-in-one at Ernie Els Pro-Am for Autism

Rickie Fowler is one of the hottest players on the PGA Tour right now. The Oklahoma State University product has taken his “overrated” label and thrown it away like a cheap box of Top Flites. Fowler is coming off an impressive 2015 campaign, with a pair of wins at The Players Championship and at the Deutsche Bank Championship respectively. He even snagged a win on the European Tour to boot. Fowler carried his momentum into 2016, with an early win at Abu Dhabi and two top fives.

This week was the annual Ernie Els Pro-Am for Autism in Palm Beach, Florida. Ernie has been an advocate for raising awareness for autism due to his son, Ben Els, who is autistic. The Big Easy hosts the event every year, with the chance for a hole-in-one for each participant with a one million dollar donation on the line if anyone can come through with an ace. Each player took his best shot, including Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald, but only one player would come through. Cue Fowler. With a pair of grey tennis shoes, his lanyard dangling from his left pocket and a borrowed pitching wedge from the aforementioned Donald, Fowler would come through in the clutch from 111 yards out. Fowler would strike it as pure as it gets, sending a one hop pin-seeker in that would send the crowd into a frenzy.

On the PGA Tour, an ace will send the crowd into a state of amazement and wonder, with high fives a plenty from caddies and players alike. But this shot was different. It wasn’t to take the lead late in a round or boost his confidence for the rest of the tournament, it was for something much greater. No, this ace made every player and crowd member feel pure elation. According to Tim Rosaforte, a member of the golf channel, Els picked up Fowler and carried him off like a true champion.

This wasn’t Rickie Fowler’s first ace and it probably won’t be his last, but I’m sure that it will be the one that he will remember forever. You can catch Fowler on the PGA tour all season, with the current world number five looking for a few more aces and a few more wins as the season continues.
